It can be confusing but I believe you have to read the sentence as a whole. There are other clues which indicate this was the case. Reports of his basically not participating at the ASM. In my experience even if someone has problems and is let go, the announcement contained "we are grateful for his service", "we wish him well in the future.." etc. nothing like that in this case.
