Intel to make major mobile strategy announcement

Intel's ultra mobility group is set to make a major announcement Tuesday that could involve supplying chips to Nokia.

In an e-mail on Monday, Intel said that it will host a news conference call Tuesday with Anand Chandrasekher, senior vice president and general manager of Intel's Ultra Mobility Group.

Bloomberg is reporting that Intel will announce a deal to supply Nokia with chips for mobile devices. An Intel spokesperson declined to comment on the Bloomberg report.

Intel announced a pact with LG Electronics back in February to collaborate on development of smartphones based on Intel's future "Moorestown" silicon and Linux Moblin software.

In March, Intel announced a deal with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to cooperate in the manufacture of Atom processors.

While Intel processors power the vast majority of PCs globally, the company is not a player in cell phones.
