CSIRO is known as the "good patent troll" because the patent lawsuit-happy organization is a research arm of the Australian government. With the help of its lawyers at Townsend and Townsend and Crew and its sparkling image, it was the first non-practicing entity (what everyone who’s not a non-practicing entity calls a troll) to get an injunction after the big eBay v MercExchange case which made it nearly impossible for non-practicing entities to get injunctions.

Well, just yesterday CSIRO revealed how much money it's gotten over the past year or so from settlements from some of the world's biggest tech companies, including Intel and Nintendo.

The envelope please? $184 million. CSIRO made the announcement at a gala to celebrate all the money. And at the celebration, CSIRO awarded a "chairman's medal for research achievement" to its scientific, commercial and LEGAL teams. So we assume that means the Townsend team, which was headed by Dan Furniss.

We also assume that Townsend, which has been known to take on some contingency fee cases, got at least some sort of cut. A chairman's medal for boosting the firm's bottom line is being readied by Townsend Chairman James Gilliland, we hope.

But the hunt is not over. CSIRO recently filed a fresh batch of lawsuits against a number of other tech companies. This time Townsend isn't working on the case. Instead, CSIRO has turned to a local Texas firm where the suits were filed.
