You can earn activity points by filling your profile with information about yourself (what city you live in, your favorite team, blogs etc.)
It has more to do with getting the appropriate signitures than anything else so I wouldn't read more into it. This from a conversation I had with RP last week. He couldn't make any comments about the process beyond that.
