Duane Morris' San Francisco Office Adds Intellectual Property Guy W. Chambers and Special Counsel Siegfried J.W. Ruppert, Ph.D.

SAN FRANCISCO, February 12, 2010—Duane Morris LLP is pleased to announce that Guy W. Chambers has joined the firm in its San Francisco office as a partner in its growing Intellectual Property Practice Group. Also joining the firm is Siegfried J.W. Ruppert, Ph.D. Chambers and Dr. Ruppert further strengthen Duane Morris' top-ranked intellectual property practice and its depth of experience in the biotechnology field, which was bolstered in December when the firm added patent partner Lee Crews, Ph.D., in Boston, and earlier in 2009, when the firm added Stefan C. Grant, M.D., as a partner in its New York office. National intellectual property publications have ranked Duane Morris among the leading law firms handling patents, trademarks, copyrights and related IP litigation. Chambers and Dr. Ruppert join Duane Morris from Townsend and Townsend and Crew LLP.

Chambers has represented clients as lead counsel in more than 40 intellectual property cases and interference actions involving a range of technologies, including pharmaceutical and biotechnology, as well as chemical, computer, mechanical, semiconductor, software and telecommunication technologies. He has frequently acted as lead counsel in patent-infringement matters in trial courts, appellate courts and before the International Trade Commission (ITC), including on behalf of a Korean chemical company and a Taiwanese manufacturer of video-display controllers. Chambers and Dr. Ruppert have worked extensively with the National Institutes of Health in a variety of patent matters, including high-profile litigation matters involving first-generation HIV recombinant diagnostic technology. Chambers is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Chambers has been a faculty lecturer for the Practising Law Institute's Patent and High Technology Licensing Seminar for the past five years. He has presented on ITC litigation at a patent strategies symposium sponsored by the Santa Clara Computer and High Technology Law Journal. Chambers is a member of the American Bar Association as well as the Bar Association of San Francisco.

Chambers earned his J.D. in 1981 from Columbia University School of Law. He graduated with highest honors in Chemical Engineering in 1978 from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Dr. Ruppert focuses his practice on patent prosecution, patent interference, patent litigation, patent infringement analysis, and opinion work in the biotechnology field. Before entering the legal field, he was a scientist at Genentech, Inc., where he and his team team identified and characterized novel proteins. He was a postdoctoral fellow at both the University of California at Berkeley and the Ruprecht-Karls University of Heidelberg, Germany. Dr. Ruppert is an inventor of a number of patents and co-authored nearly 40 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the San Francisco Intellectual Property Law Association, the American Bar Association and the Bar Association of San Francisco.

Dr. Ruppert earned his J.D. in 2003 from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. He earned his Ph.D. in Biological Sciences in 1989, with honors, from the Ruprecht-Karls University of Heidelberg. In 1985, Dr. Ruppert graduated from the Ruprecht-Karls University of Heidelberg with a B.S. in Biological Sciences.
