Rick:
As usual, good posts. I agree the 1000 units are probably not for AMTRAK.
As others have mentioned, Europe is far more ``train friendly`` than the US. It`s very easy to ride from Paris to Amsterdam on their speedy trains -- over 150 mph with limited stops along the way. The rest of the EU is similar with lots of routes well over 3 hours -- my WAG for the minimum time to make the digEplayer rental make sense to the consumer.
Asia will be much more difficult as the train rides are very crowded -- even in the First Class cars -- with lots of stops around the major markets. They have very few ``limited stops`` routes until you get out into the countryside where the riders have far less disposable income and that is putting it kindly -- think live chickens riding in the seat next to you deep into mainland China.
One other note: Wencor has an office and an IFE partner in Europe. I trust they are well equiped with samples!
Like many of the non-IFE markets discussed here for months, the train biz does make good marketing sense for volume sales.
We`ll see.
