Very little progress being made.
Minimal support from airlines
Still no draft specification
Disagreement concerning forward-looking MPEG-4 based “standard”
Unclear license terms for MPEG-4
Severe lack of Engineering, Legal and WAEA resources
Time line – continues to slip
Need to Honestly Evaluate Scope and Objectives of the DCMWG!
Very little progress is being made
Manufacturers continue to bring multiple formats to market, esp. Portable devices
Studios are OK with MPEG-1 and 2 – WAEA 0395
Airlines are not participating in DCMWG despite requests
Examples of Problem
APS/Wencor digEPlayer uses DivX5 bit rate 880 kbps resolution 346x240
IMS PEA uses Windows Media 9 bit rate 1.3 – 1.5 mbps resolution 533x300
Yes Solo uses Windows Media 9
Panasonic – undecided/unclear
Chaos already exists when delivering MPEG-4 family of codecs
Key Questions/Issues?
Studios or airlines will be asked to pay for all these different digital formats
H.264 (current focus of DCMWG) focuses ONLY on embedded systems, not appropriate for portables
What can be standardized near term – REALISTICALLY??
Unlikely to be able to pick a single codec winner?
Options to Refocus the DCMWG
Establish bit rate for MPEG-4 codecs
Specify a bit rate of X and a resolution of Y
X could be 1.0 mbps (splits the difference between what is available today among vendors)
Manufacturers gain advantage of additional server space
Resolution Y- can be debated
Finish the Audio work (higher than 100 kbps)
Finish Security/key management
