New Archos digital player opens door to personal IFE
July 28, 2005 – A NEW portable multimedia player from Archos has brought the concept of personal IFE (Inflight Online, July 7) another step towards reality.
In a move that will give IFE system manufacturers pause for thought, portable digital entertainment specialist Archos has introduced the Gmini 402 pocket multimedia centre. Designed to play DVD-quality video and Windows Media audio and video files, the 20Gb device supports both protected-download and subscription music services.
Featuring a 2.2in colour LCD screen, Gmini 402 measures 4.17in x 2.37in x 0.69in and weighs less than six ounces. Capacity is put at 80 hours of video, 200,000 photos or 10,000 songs. It can play Windows Media Video, DivX and MPEG-4 video files, and MP3, WMA and protected WMA audio files.
Content-loading capabilities include autosync with Windows Media Player 10 for easy file transfers via a high-speed USB 2.0 interface from a PC or Mac, and support for Microsoft PlaysForSure download and subscription services to allow easy transfer and playback of music or videos acquired from PlaysForSure-compatible online stores.
Content available through PlaysForSure includes music from MSN Music, Musicmatch, MusicNow, Napster and Wal-Mart Music Downloads, and video from the CinemaNow online store.
Gmini 402 is available now in the USA at a price of $330
