just a follow up here....do you see the indifference in these two statements?

As I commented prior...they note to use of "the flash mass storage system as a cache"...however, when they are talking "latency" they are considering the I/O of the flash storage system....
Their considerations that reduce latency...."inventions in caching, data compression and data tiering" that reduce latency." or three distinct details.
For e.Digital in utilizing a flash(not as a cache) but as an off the shelf device....they have multiple innovations for caching in front of the flash(or I/O), data structure formatted within the flash(noted as data tiering above) , and they manage any type compression. They also have other API involved....including the ability to implement the attributes of any high level OS allowing portability from one system to another.
With that, they claim "inventions in caching" where the question is then either an innovation using the flash as a cache as initially stated, or, caching, as in I/O in front of the flash as e.Digital does.
Two different issues....
