Integrating known and common features can be very cheap for large manufacturing companies, especially in the electronics side of the business.
I can now buy MP3 players that have a key chain attached for under $10 direct from one of our China factories. The darn thing actually works. It`s common technology. So is a credit card reader, the hard drive, the screen, and other pieces parts of the digEplayer -- except the security / platform, as far we know. I think other companies will be in the portable market with studio approved product. I think Brent Wood would like to meet them. If you don`t, Ok.
The bottom line is EDIG is good at the integration of a specific feature set to what they have innovated. That`s what they do. My point to Dean was simply that IF Wencor could find the same level of studio approved security from another ODM house, they might take their chances at managing the manufacturing themselves. Since they have a bit of experience in a tech spec world like airplane parts, I would think they can handle it. Thus, putting a few more nickels into Wencor`s charity golf tournament and slush fund.
As for EDIG and Wencor`s relationship, they are in the narrow IFE business together today. Wencor is doing what is best for Wencor. Any good purchasing manager would want to know if there is a better deal from someone else. That`s what they do. If any of us held Wencor corporate shares we would want Brent Wood to maximize our return as well.
