Did anyone ever read the exploits of the whaler, Essex, out of New England? It was the tragic account of this ship that inspired Mellville to write his magnificent novel. The Essez was, in fact, sunk by an enraged whale, west of Chile. The crew split up and made their way to the coast on small boats. There are a number of accounts, related by various crew members, which included acts of cannibalism.
It's good reading.
