First low fares airline to offer in-flight radio

6 September 2005

Flybe, one of Europe’s largest low fares airlines, today launches its new in-flight radio service, Flybe Unplugged, the first offering of its kind amongst UK-based low fares carriers. The new radio service will be available on all Flybe aircraft and on all flights across both the domestic and international route network.

The pre-recorded channel will be hosted by Exeter-based Gemini FM DJ Chris Dinnis and will feature contemporary pop hits by artists such as Coldplay, Keane and Joss Stone, updated with new content on a quarterly basis.

The radio will be aired pre-take off and again during flight and will offer not only added value to the passenger experience through the most up to date music selection, but will also be used to increase customer awareness of other Flybe routes and services, the ‘Deli in the Sky’ food and drink range, and Flybe’s duty free bargains.

Flybe Unplugged represents an significant investment for Flybe, with the initial annual investment of £30,000 consolidating Flybe’s commitment to offering a premium service and ongoing product development for both business and leisure air travellers.

New Flybe Unplugged presenter Chris Dinnis comments: “As a long time customer of Flybe I`m really excited to be the voice that passengers will hear on board their flights. I am an Exeter lad who broadcasts on one of the leading radio stations in the South West (Gemini FM ), so its extra special to me that my voice can be heard on one of the UK’s leading airlines who are based in my region.”

Simon Lilley, Head of Marketing, Flybe, says: “The cabins will be rockin’! Flybe have continually proved that there is room to develop a product between the legacy carriers and the hard core low cost carriers. More product innovations are in the pipeline, and we will be looking at other forms of in-flight entertainment following what we hope will be a big hit with Flybe Unplugged. The use of one the leading regional radio stations to join us on this venture is absolutely reflective of our stance in serving the UK regions.”
