Long Term Evolution (LTE) is the next gen cellular protocol, aka 4G. Android fones, for the most part, currently support this protocol. I have a Samsung (Nexus) that will do 3G or 4G. Currently, though, 4G is a bit of a battery hog. This may be why Apple has held off including the capability in their last fone. Their 5 fone will have it. This has been common knowledge, or at least common speculation for a while now. The modem chip supporting this technology, I believe, is provided by Qcom.
