I did a quick search on the patent PDF for "reference map" and it looks in Figure 5, step 520 the defects of the selected cells are determined, step 530 creates the reference map. Below is a snapshot of the process.... I also searched for the keyword "crypt" and found numerous references for decrypting and encrypting. I'm working on it now... chat later.
