SEOUL, South Korea — Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. reported Wednesday (Feb. 22) it has made the driver source code for its OneNAND fusion flash memory solution publicly available.

Samsung is making the code available to mobile systems designers that use the Linux 2.6 operating system available for download on both its own web site and that of the Linux/Open Source community.

``Open source code has become one of the main forces driving the accelerated pace at which consumers are embracing mobility, so our decision to make OneNAND available for open designs should be very well-received,`` said Jon Kang, senior vice president of technical services at Samsung Semiconductor, Inc., a Samsung affiliate.

OneNAND`s architecture features a single-level-cell NAND core with SRAM and logic elements to emulate a NOR Flash interface. The memory solution provides a sustained data read speed of 108 megabytes per second-- four times faster than conventional NAND flash memory. Write speed is 10 megabytes per second—reportedly 60 times faster than multi-level-cell NOR flash memory.

Samsung also has OneNAND drivers available for Microsoft OSs.
