As a side note, I grew up in Ventura, CA and lived there from 1948 - 1969 (born 1947..old!!). On my 12th or 13th birthday, I wanted to go eat at a famous pancake house in Santa Barbara..don't recall the name. We went on a Sunday, and shortly after being seated, a few tables away, was a group of 8 or so adults and young kids like me, and there he was, Davy Crockett!!
I said "Mom, there's Davy Crockett!!" Mr. Parker heard me, gave me a smile, I got up and went over to shake his hand. He asked what brought us here today and I told him it was my birthday. The next thing you know, he invited us to join his family for breakfast, we did, and he paid.
At my age, to have breakfast with him and his family, was a birthday I'll never forget. He was every young kids hero, and will be dearly missed by all.
PS, Gil & Dean...tried any of his wines?
