Any academic essay involves some form of citation format. There are different citation formats, and each style has a specific application depending on the topic of the essay. When I was in college, I didn't know much about the difference between the different formats, and I admit it was difficult for me. So I often had to call on the experts at writing companies to do my homework for me. Whichever citation format you choose, be sure to use the same format throughout your essay, keeping in mind the different purposes of the citation.

Essentially, the citation format allows readers to easily find the sources used, identify the ideas and language of others that are part of the essay, and show the extent of the research done in writing the paper.

The Chicago citation format can be used in any academic course, but it is usually used in essays related to the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. It is even used as the default style when no specific citation format is required. But if a specific citation format is not specified, it is always best to seek advice from your tutor/assistant tutor. According to the Chicago style, an academic paper is usually divided into three parts: the front part, the main part containing the essay itself, and the back part containing the references.

This style has two systems of documentation. There is an older system that is mostly used in essays related to history and humanities. It is known as the Notes and Bibliography system. According to this system, bibliography is given in accompanying notes, which may be located in the work itself or grouped at the end of the work. The first line of each note is indented by a couple of spaces or a quarter of an inch.

Grammar and punctuation are particularly important, no matter what style of writing you do. Don't forget that if you don't adhere to generally accepted rules, you can easily undermine all your writing efforts, and if you don't adhere to punctuation rules, the meaning of the whole sentence can change. For correct grammar and punctuation, if an element is crucial to the meaning of the sentence, do not separate it with commas. In addition to the notes, a bibliography is provided at the end of the abstract. This bibliography is a list of all works that have been cited in the essay, as well as other works that you have cited but not cited in the paper. When using the notes-bibliography system, only brief information about the works cited is given in the notes. Generally, this system of bibliographic notes is the preferred system as it makes reviewing much easier. The newer system is usually referred to as the author-date system. 

The author-date system is usually used in essays related to the natural and social sciences. In general, this method is simpler than the annotation-bibliography format. With this system, intra-text citations are done using a parenthetical system with the author's name and date of publication. The bibliography, which is given at the end of the essay, should contain a detailed bibliographic citation. As with the old system, the newer citation format should provide details of all works cited as well as other readings.

The Chicago citation format requires the main body of the essay to be typed double-spaced. However, quotations from other people's works, bibliography, footnotes and article-by-article lists may be printed single-spaced. References in the author-date system are records of references listed alphabetically by author. With this arrangement, readers who subsequently review the essay can easily link the in-text citation to the reference at the end of the work.
