Message: Mt. Isa Mayor to step down

EMBATTLED Mount Isa Mayor John Molony today announced he will not contest the March 31 local government election.

The 69-year-old, who has been under intense media and community scrutiny since losing his licence for drink-driving on New Year’s Eve, cited the loss of his two younger brothers earlier this year, his ageing mother, his own health and the desire to spend more time with his wife Heather as reasons for relinquishing the top job.

Cr Molony told today’s Mount Isa City Council policy and planning committee meeting that he had made the decision not to contest for another four-year term “some months ago with his wife”.

“And whilst I am bursting with energy despite turning 70 on February 12, another four years down the track can mean some physical deterioration.”

Cr Molony has had ongoing back problems, already undergoing surgery, and said there is the likelihood of more surgery later this year.

In a parting gesture, Cr Molony nominated running mate and fellow councillor Duncan Cunningham as his successor.

“Duncan Cunningham will be the next Mayor of Mount Isa.”

Cr Cunningham did not comment at the meeting, but in the past 30 minutes has told media during a brief break from the agenda that he will run for Mayor.

“Cr Molony has just made my announcement for me,” he said.
