I am going to take a crack at your devil's advocate question because I happen to be on here late and not because I am qualified to answer. But, I think one reason we can be reasonably sure about the mineral make-up is the hundreds of rock and vegetation samples. Also, the precedent of all the other mines in this area sure makes it seem logical that this is a copper anomaly with other minerals. Also, I seem to recall someone saying Phelps Dodge did drill around here at some point but maybe I misunderstood.
