There have been many times over the past few years where the share price would be creeping up, and then suddenly, usually just 2-3 minutes before close, drop like a rock. I've been wondering where the folks who worked that process were over the past ten days as the price has jumped like it has.
One way to make it happen requires a couple of players. Player A puts in a buy order for a really low price - one that no real investor would sell at. A short tme later Player B put in a sell order for that same price. It won't work on a stock that is constantly being traded, but for one with spotty trading like LBSR it can work. Usually the trade (in the case of LBSR) is only for 1000 shares or so, so actual money amounts are negligible (especially if the Players don't have to pay commissions).
There are other strategies as well.
