I suppose a schism could arise in a situation where one of the two found a "bird in the hand" more attractive than "two in the bush".  One could even envision scenarios where the new the new equation of 4+4+1 = 9 could be reduced to 4+0.6 > 4+0.4, and even see it as a nice place to put a "wedge".
