One can assume anything.  For instance, I will assume that sometimes people can have such an emotional or ego-oriented position in things that it overpowers their sense of reason.  It has certainly happened to me.  And in a former life, I saw it routinely among real estate developers who often preferred forced bankruptcy to just getting by (lowering prices).  AKA, hanging on the very end.
