Seems to me that 'Canadians' (or any other group) wouldn't be necessary if they had just found a way to put a drill in the ground, somewhere(!)  I think even JB, much as he was opposed to the notion of a "small" effort, would have come to the conclusion that it was the only way forward and would have found a way to make it happen.
