TO Star says Noront sees Wynne reviving Ring of Fire

2013-11-11 06:37 ET - In the News

The Toronto Star reports in its Saturday edition that Ontario wants to revive the Ring of Fire. The Star's Rob Ferguson writes that Premier Cathleen Wynne says Ontario is seeking private and public partners in a development corporation to build about $2-billion of roads and mining infrastructure. Ms. Wynne made the request in a letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Friday. Noront Resources aims to develop its Eagle's Nest nickel-copper deposit in the Ring of Fire by 2016. Ms. Wynne says Ontario is prepared to invest a "substantial" but undisclosed sum in the project and wants Ottawa to match it to prepare the zone for mining, which is expected to be worth about $60-billion. Estimated costs are up to $1-billion for "industrial infrastructure" and $1.25-billion for roads. "We expect your government to come to the table," Ms. Wynne wrote Mr. Harper, citing previous federal investments in the Alberta oil sands, hydroelectric development at Churchill Falls in Labrador and a British Columbia transmission line. Ottawa reiterated its willingness to collaborate on the Ring of Fire. Greg Rickford -- federal minister for Northern Ontario -- gripes that he had no advance notice of Ms. Wynne's "vague" request.
