Primed24 you are right in the fact of the basic definition of capital gains vs dividends and tax consequences, What I tried to convey, but didn't was the fact that any income received by SLI would first be subject to tax, then the after tax profits paid out to the shareholders. Kinda like the Income Trust argument. You are right that alot of factors would come into play based upon the individual taxpayers situation.
Also the vehicle that one holds his or hers shares into would be of consequence. The TFSA would be the best, by a long shot.
I do believe that there was a move afoot by our present government, when it was in opposition, to not tax capital gains. Wonder where that went...
I personally believe that someone will buy SLI lock, stock and barrel and we will be left with a capital gain.
