Peru: Leading the global mining industry
Peru
Tuesday, March 8
9:00 am – 12:00 noon
Room 714A

Peru continues to offer a very positive economic performance. GDP growth rate for 2010 is forecast at 8.5%, and the country has expects to continue its expansion in the coming years thanks to the increased confidence of foreign and domestic investors.

Over the last several years, Peru’s credit documents have been qualified as investment grade, and the country has signed over 33 investment protection and free trade agreements and is negotiating additional international commercial treaties.

Peru is one of the largest mineral producers of the world and has increasingly become a very popular destination for exploration investment. In 2009, Peru was the third in the Metals Economics Group exploration investment ranking, having received 7% of worldwide exploration dollars. This status has been achieved through a combination of favorable economic and political factors combined with widespread recognition of the country’s potential to host world-class ore deposits.

Annual gold production in the country increased from approximately 0.6 million ounces in 1992 to over 6.0 million ounces in the last seven years. Likewise, copper production will substantially increase from its current level of 1.2 million tons to more than 3.5 million tons of fine copper in the next 5-7 years. Peru maintains its position as the largest silver producer in the world and is one of the top producers of zinc, lead, molybdenum, tin and other metals. Over US$40 billion dollars will be invested in the mining sector in the next few years.

Peru offers an important window of opportunity for innovative explorers to leverage working with one of the best mining cadastral systems in the world, and benefit from the availability of extensive geological project and prospect information gathered during the last 18 years of intense exploration activity.

Peru is also the only jurisdiction in Latin America that offers venture investment possibilities through the Lima Stock Exchange, which has been very successful in the last seven years in facilitating the participation of local investors in junior exploration funding.

On Tuesday, March 8, you are invited to participate in informative discussions featuring high-level Peruvian government officials and key representatives of mining companies currently operating in Peru, including major producers and exploration companies.

The conference program includes an update on the mining industry presented by Pedro Sánchez, Minister of Energy and Mines of Peru, and an enlightening speech by Luis Carranza, former Minister of Economy and Finance of Peru, on the extraordinary achievements of Peru’s economy and the current efforts of the country to increase its international business competitiveness.

Francis Stenning, general manager of the Lima Stock Exchange (BVL), will speak about financing junior exploration companies in Peru and the benefits of the recent integration of the trading platforms of Chile, Colombia and Peru.

John Black, President and CEO of Antares Minerals, will share that company’s recent success as of a junior company in Peru with the discovery and development of its Haquira copper project in one of the most impressive mineralized belts of the world. Antares Minerals was recently sold to First Quantum Minerals for $453 million. An overview of the most recent gold discoveries in Peru and South America will be given by César Vidal, vice president exploration, Compañía de Minas Buenaventura.

Mining companies operating in Peru devote much effort to achieving high standards in the field of corporate social and environmental responsibility. Outstanding examples of successful social programs will be described, and challenges that the industry will still face in the future.

A cocktail reception will be held in the evening of the same day will provide the opportunity to meet Peruvian authorities and industry friends, while enjoying prestigious Peruvian cuisine.

Further information will be available at the Peruvian Pavilion Booth # 1423 of the Trade Show. For more information visit the Peru website, www.pdacperu.com.
