Could it not simply have been a stop loss that was triggered as the SP creeped lower in early trading?

That kind of stuff happens more often than you might think...and because there is little volume it gets amplified because the market order filled buys all the way down to .40

...of course there are many other scenarios that are possible...but my gut is telling me this is the most likely.
