Funny you mention the Harvest Energy having difficulty turning a profit. Both managements were promoting the idea of so call integrated approach. Simply there is no integration if you do not refine your own oil and you are at the mercy of the market prices for your feed stock.

Valero the largest independent US refinery (not integrated) has the long term plans to close 30% of their plants and diversified to Asian market were the margins are more reasonable.
