Green field is a project which is started completely from scratch. Brown field piggybacks on previous development.

Pros & cons to each, depending on the situation and the industry and other factors.

Brownfield can be more efficient if you can utilize existing resources. It can also be inefficient if the existing resources are not appropriate for the new development or if they are a liability.
