Hi sharky;

A greenfield operation is one which is constructed from nothing on an open field or a "green field" such as POD 1 at Great Divide or the Algar Pod at a huge investment of dollars. Connacher had to put in the foundations, build the infrastructure and the plant walls on an empty field which is very expensive. A brownfield operation is one where you use the existing plant for your expansion to process the oil. This will occur with Connacher's EIA expansion to 44,000 barrels of bitumen per day. The Algar plant will be expanded and used as the central bitumen processing plant. With a brownfield operation, Connacher only needs to put in a number of remote new drill pads and tiny modular Pods to pump the steam into the ground (at Pods 3, 4, 5) and pump the bitumen out of the ground and pipe it back to Algar for processing. This is a lot cheaper to construct as you don't need to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to build another huge new processing plant such as Pod 1 or Algar. It is called "brown field" because you are not building a new major plant but rather are using an existing plant hence the "brown field" as the ground has already been turned over for the main processing plant.

Cheers; Scott
