Two officers of the Anzoategui state police force also suffered unspecified injuries in the clash that took place Thursday at the Mitsubishi Motors Company (MMC) assembly plant located in that eastern Venezuelan region. The victims were identified as Pedro Suarez Poito, 23, and Jose Gabriel Marcano Hurtado, 36, who were shot to death, according to the local press. The incident occurred when police tried to evacuate about 100 workers from the plant they had occupied after being laid off, union leader Felix Martinez said. "The chief of the Police Immediate Action group, Grip Manuel Ortiz, gave the order to open fire," Martinez told the Caracas daily Ultimas Noticias. The union leader said that a judge in the Bolivar municipality, Diana Vasquez, had appeared at the plant with a judicial ruling in favor of the company and ordered the place to be evacuated, which unleashed the violence. The labor dispute began on Jan. 12 when workers belonging to the Singetram automotive union occupied the Mitsubishi facilities in response to management's decision to terminate 135 workers of the contractor Induservis, a company providing maintenance services.
