Newfie, depends entirely on the jurisdiction. In Canada, different places have different rules - and I imagine it's the same in the US. I moved to Toronto from the West, and at law school the class was asked whether you own everything, and I said "No" - I was laughed out of the room. I was right for where I had been raised, but wrong for Southern Ontario.
