Message: Is KRY Going to Receive Any Accrued Interest on the Award?

Auntierooski,

The ICSID award included the award amount $1,200 million + interest $202 million from 2008 through 03/15/2016 (the ppre-award interest).

The ICSID post-award interest was set at "the 6-month average U.S. Dollar LIBOR + 1%, compounded annually, calculated from the date of the Award until full payment". Therefore, one must use the rate applicable to the period / year that started on 03/16/2016 through 12/31/16 and every calendar year thereafter until final payment (i.e., 2017 - 2023(?)). The interest calculation is on the unpaid award amount. Hence, one must adjust the interest calculation for the cash payments made by Venezuela (table below)...

... to eliiminate the unearned interest.

I exclude the interest credit on the iliquid securities payment because they were and remain iliquid and could not be traded for cash from the outset. Put another way, these securities have not earned a penny since the time they were received as payment from Venezuela and have declined in value since then as a result of the time value of money (TVM). In fact, the iliquid securities amount need to bear an interest charge precisely to compensate for the lost TVM).
