My understanding as to why people think high oil prices are here to stay (don't necessarily agree or disagree) is more a function of almost geometrically increasing demand from China and India with very modest production increases. But, I think one has to factor in the impact on exportable/transferable alternative energy sources (particularly high efficiency solar) as a buffer.
