Manual: In manual mode the ESMU is controlled directly by the Control Engineer via the Distribution Management System (DMS). In this mode of operation the control engineer uses network data from the Pi database to understand the current status of the network and issues commands accordingly.

Smart Control: In this mode a forecasting engine uses network data from the Pi database to produce short term forecasts of network demand, and smart control algorithms then use these forecasts to send out commands to individual ESMUs to manage a particular network constraint or requirement. These individual components are defined as Active Distribution Device Management (ADDM).
