Message: Fancamp options nine mining claims in Thunder Bay

Every so often someone throws in the question about Native American involvement in mine exploration and mining near their territory. The fact is that the James Bay Lowlands contain minimal land claimed by Indian bands. It's also not the kind of place that you can throw up blockades to stop legally authorized exploration.

Yes it's important for companies involved in this area to be good citizens and foster ties and assist local people BUT it's not required. Once a mine goes in there will be special programs put into place AND the infrastructure alone will be of great benefit to locals.

At this stage in exploration of James Bay the local Indian bands are cheering everyone on since they now that the more mines identified and eventually put into production the better off they will be.

I fail to see that there is any problem now or in the immediate future. No question they'll benefit but their position isn't terribly strong to make early demands.
