Semismart,

That is a very loaded question you ask because there are so many variables to take into account when assessing the economic viability of a project. Some variables include but are not limited to: cost of labor, location and proximity to logistics, infrastructures, shipping, energy costs, size of deposit(s), availability of water, geological structure and mine plan, the price of gold, and many many more I am sure I am not aware of.

Here is some food for thought:

  • Osisko (OSK-T)) is going into production on the Malarctic project with an average grade around 1g/t. They had to move a whole town and pay for the relocation of the people. They also had to build all kinds of infrastructure. The Malarctic deposit is 7MM ounces and open pitable as it stands.
  • Barrick Gold (ABX-T), the largest single producing gold company, has an average grade of reserves around 2g/t. They have taken cost cutting actions such as buying producing energy companies to vertically integrate their business.
  • Newmont Mining (NEM-N) has the highest grade in the industry for reserves in the ground at roughly 7g/t
That being said, here are some quick facts about Golden Hope which strengthen the economic viability case:
  • Labor in the region is relatively cheap and abundant
  • Infrastructure and logitics are all in place and do not need to be built (road, rail, water)
  • Hydro-Quebec offers very cheap power mining operations
  • Water is abundant
  • There will likely be more than one deposit found in the region therefore making it very attractive for production economics
  • The price of gold is clearly in an longterm bull market

I am certain I have missed on a few points, but I hope this clarifies the question a bit.

Long story short, it is way to early in the game to be thinking of an actual production operation. People buying at these levels will have sold, or at least traded in and out a few times, and made money long before any mine is ever built in the region in my opinion. Then again, people who bought OSK, IAM, YRI, JAG or others who are still holding them have reaped great rewards but also endured a rollercoaster ride.

All the best, and remember, do your own DD!
