The way I understand it, in the past, many glacier formations up to 2 km thick moved in many directions thus eroding volcanic rocks below containing quartz and nuggety gold in it. Placer gold deposits were then formed in the process.

I have been told that bigger nuggets were formed after large amount of tiny gold flakes bonding together. As an example, take a few lead shots and hammer them together, they will bond in a unique piece.
