Change of plans with soaring costs to ship/truck

Kennecott buys Ishpeming mill for processing ores

ISHPEMING, Mich. (AP) — A company that plans to operate a nickel and copper mine in Michigan's Upper Peninsula has purchased an abandoned mill near Ishpeming to process the minerals.

Kennecott Minerals Co. originally intended to ship the ores to Canada. But project manager Jon Cherry says that plan was scrapped because of soaring fuel costs.

Instead, the company bought the old Humboldt Mill, which has been closed since the mid-1990s.
