Cliffs cannot afford to walk away from this...one of the last known chromite deposits in the world and one of the richest grades ever know. Securing this resource is of strategic importance to the future of this company. They simply cannot walk away from this as another player will surely take their place given the insatiable demand coming from China and India.
Regardless of who 'owns' the land, you have to recognize FN as a stakeholder and party to what is going on here. I used to think that claims were important. Then I thought spinoffs were important. Then I thought railway routes were important. The more I see this unfold the more it makes me realize that the party that wraps their arms around the First Nations, starts a dialogue with them and builds a meaningful and integrative rather than distributive relationship with them is the one with the strategic advantage.
