Soccer - A gentleman's game played by Hooligans
Rugby - A hooligan's game played by Gentlemen
Rugby was born when William Webb Ellis picked up the soccer ball at Rugby School (England, around 1868) and ran with it. Soccer was played by the boys of Rugby School and everywhere else, and it was generally a very tame game. Rugby turned out, over time, to be a little rougher. Eventually, soccer became everyman's game while the private school boys, all gentlemen of course, played the rougher sport.
Go Eagles!
