OK, so what is the “584 worth?
First, thanks to milestone, please see NEC’s financials at the following link:
http://www.necel.com/ir/en/library/p...
See page 30 - (Reference) Breakdown of Net Sales by Platform
According to NEC’s financials, for the 6 months ending September 30th, 2007 – the SoC platform accounted for $1,117,000,000 or 36.6% of total revenue.
Now look at the only platform NEC uses of ARM’s according to ARM’s website:
http://www.arm.com/community/display...
“Product Description - System-on-Chip Lite + “Ethernet-ready” ARM7TDMI-S™ based, customizable micro-controller”
You will also see that NEC uses MIPs as well for products (MIPS32 and MIPS64 cores) using the SoC platform:
http://www.mips.com/customers/licens...
“NEC, a leading proponent of the MIPS® architecture for more than a decade, has developed innovative, award-winning solutions around both the MIPS32® and MIPS64® architectures. Products include the 64-bit VR Series, which includes 14 family members with countless design wins, and single-chip offerings for a wide range of digital consumer products, such as personal video recorders and DVD recorders.”
OK, so here is my question. The SoC platform is bringing in a lot of money for NEC, according to their financials, revenues exceeding $2Bil or more per year from a product that utilizes the “584. Now, I can’t extrapolate what % is based on ARM specific products because ARM is not the only chip manufacturer they use, as they use MIPs for SoC products and I think they might use TI as well, but you can see from the NEC financials link above that the SoC platform makes a lot of money for NEC and albeit the other J’s as well. Knowing this, would you include the “584 in the settlement agreement with the J’s if they only give us say $100M each, how about $200M each, or $$$$$? Think about it, based on NEC’s financials, the SoC based products look to make NEC another $16 Bil before the patents expire, and that does not include what the SoC platform has made them since the inception of the “584. IMO, you also have to consider the fact that ALL of their products, including the products that utilize the SoC platform IMO infringe on the all encompassing…THE WHEEL… “336.
IMO, I don’t know if we will or won’t include the entire MMP in a settlement agreement. All I do know is that if we do….they better pay! When I look at these #’s, I am thinking that it could be a blessing in disguise that ARM was removed as we may be able to really take it to them if we get a favorable ruling from both the USPTO and the Appeals court.
AIMVHBOGO…All in my very humble but obviously greedy opinion! Good luck to you, me, us, and all longs! Have a good weekend everybody!
