During a stay the litigants are unable to access court time, which continues ticking. When the stay ends, the 30 days of court time have been lost, as has anything scheduled during that time. The next item is the amended Pre-Trial Conference, then jury selection and trial, as per the schedule.

For this reason, many believe that neither litigants would be prepared to lose court time unless a settlement was imminent, nor would the court grant such a stay unless there was persuasive evidence that it would progress matters.
