I think the RIMM signing is great and significant, but the language used in the PR isn't that far from what was used in the Seiko PR. I'm not sure we can read that much into the "agreed to terms" as meaning anything more than they have agreed to purchase the license, and even though they haven't done so yet, Alliancense wanting to make the announcment as soon as possible.
That being said, I think milestone's earlier point that the litigous RIMM agreeing to license rather than litigate bodes well.
From the RIMM PR:
RIM and The TPL Group Agree to Moore Microprocessor Patent™ Portfolio License
"We are excited to announce another major mobile handset manufacturer has joined the MMP Licensing Program ,” said Roy Maharaj, Vice President, Licensing for Alliacense.
The sweeping scope of applications using MMP Portfolio design techniques continues to encourage the world’s leading manufacturers of end user products from around the globe to become MMP Portfolio licensees. Over 40 global companies from the US, Europe, Japan, Korea and Taiwan have purchased MMP Portfolio licenses, including many industry leaders such as Fujitsu, Hewlett Packard, Kenwood, Mattel, Nokia, Philips, and Sony.
And from the Seiko PR:
Seiko Epson Agrees to Purchase Moore Microprocessor Patent™ Portfolio License
Competition intensifies as the world’s leading Intellectual Property companies seek competitive advantage in their respective business sectors
CUPERTINO, Calif. - June 23, 2006 - Alliacense today announced that Seiko Epson Corporation has agreed, pending approval by the Seiko Epson Board of Directors, to purchase from The TPL Group a license to the Moore Microprocessor Patent™ (MMP) Portfolio.
