It is my understanding that with the '148 and '336 in particular, the true benefit of each is derived from their integration.
If I'm remembering correctly, the '336 is for the ring oscillator clock, and the '148 has do with location of the ring oscillator internally - on the substrate near the CPU. If the ring oscillator were located externally, it would not experience the same "environmental" conditions as the CPU, thus decreasing it's functional benefit significantly.
