I'll take Moore's appraisal of chip design over yours any day, no offense.
He specfically states: it came out much bigger, more power hungry, more complicated.
Speed is not the only factor in a good chip design. What good is speed if it's the size of a beer cooler, pulls 10,000 watts, and requires liquid cooling? I'm sure there are considerations besides raw speed that led to Moore's judgement. Whether is is a valid judgement or not, I don't know. But you can't dismiss it simply by saying, "Some company liked it and I think they built the world's fastest computer or something with it!"
As for Genroco, let's get it straight. It wasn't a comptuer or server that they built. They, with others, demonstrated what they claimed was the world's fastest SAN (storage area network) for CERN. All Genroco contributed were the switches and bridges. The big boys, Sun, Compaq, etc contributed the rest. That was in 1999, IIRC. Prior to that, Genroco had been touting their switches as the world's fastest. That's a far cry from the world's fastest comptuer or server, which implies they had the fastest CPU.
And it is telling that by 2001 they were facing oblivion. IIRC Cisco and others chewed them up for reliability and surpassed them in speed.
