I don't want to venture too far in the realm of speculation, but here's some thoughts which I think start to paint a semi-opaque picture (for me)

HTC is Apple's largest competitor in the handset market
TPL relocates to Cupertino in 2007(a bit of a stretch here, but still salient)
the Apple license was bought in 2010 (according to court records) which is when the '336 recieved it's 1st NIRC from the USPTO http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/mmp-portfolio-prevails-in-latest-patent-reexamination-99332974.html
2011 Goolge (droid = htc os) buys Motorola's moblity IP patent suite

My far fetched speculation is Apple would ostensibly buy the MMP to use as currency to offset Google's new IP suite.
