I don't want to venture too far in the realm of speculation, but here's some thoughts which I think start to paint a semi-opaque picture (for me)

• HTC is Apple's largest competitor in the handset market
• TPL relocates to Cupertino in 2007(a bit of a stretch here, but still salient)
• the Apple license was bought in 2010 (according to court records) which is when the '336 recieved it's 1st NIRC from the USPTO http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/mmp-portfolio-prevails-in-latest-patent-reexamination-99332974.html
• 2011 Goolge (droid = htc os) buys Motorola's moblity IP patent suite

My far fetched speculation is Apple would ostensibly buy the MMP to use as currency to offset Google's new IP suite.

Again, all my thoughts to add to the Apple/buyout speculation of last week. kw
