The deficit doesn't matter to the GOP, its a lie that Fox cooked up and is not serious about (the tax increase for millionaires will decrease the deficit for example). The GOP was pro deficit spending and anti surplus just 9 years ago (remember the tax rebates?) and has flip flopped. A GOP led government has not reduced the deficit in recent times.

The real issue is the GOP's desire to have the average US citizen pay mammoth reparations to the banks who have screwed up so royally. And then the banks will reward their pet politicians accordingly.
