Stocks split when management thinks the SP is too high a price for the most buyers. That is usually above $20 or $30 a share.  If it splits say 4:1 from $20 to $5 everyone would receive 4 shares for everyy one they owned before the split end up with the same total value. Generally the SP increases slightly after a split.
